Celebrating 50th Anniversary of the movie ‘Swallows and Amazons’ in 2024

On Saturday 6th April there was be a 50th Anniversary screening of the original film ‘Swallows and Amazons’ followed by a Q&A with cast and crew hosted by Brian Sibley and the screenwriter David Wood at the Cinema Museum in London. More info and link to ticket sales here.

A train strike complicated plans for many ! but cast members Simon West (Captain John), Suzanna Hamilton (Mate Susan), Sten Grendon (Boy Roger) and Kit Seymour (Captain Nancy) managed to make it, along with Gareth Tandy, who worked on the crew as Third Assistant director, and Jane Grendon who was our chaperone.

Cedric James who worked on the camera came along.

As did our Make Up Designer Peter Robb-King .

I hoped Terry Needham, the Second Assistant might be able to make it but he is in New Zealand.

It was packed with every seat sold – a tribute to all the others on the crew who have passed away.

The screening took place at the Cinema Museum, 2 Dugard Way (off Renfrew Road) Kennington, London SE11 4TH, a former workhouse where Charlie Chaplin once stayed.

Thanks go to David Wood for getting us all together.

  1. I hope all goes well, I am sure it will be a great day. I am just sorry I won’t be able to be there.

    1. Thanks so much. It’s been really popular. I gather they have a full house so suggested they have a 2nd screening after the Q&A but don’t know if this is possible.

  2. Dear Sophie,

Having corresponded in the past in relation to The making of…. Please accept my best wishes for the event on Saturday, for a film that is dear to my heart.

I will not be able to make the screening although I would  have loved to.

My regards to all and I hope you all have a wonderful time celebrating and have lashings of grog and buns!

    Yours,

    David Kerr

      1. Good morning Sophie,

I will eagerly await the report.

As for a question….I could probably think of many but personally, I would like to have seen more films produced at the time. I know from yourself that Great Northern was considered.

For me I would love to have seen Pigeon Post. I always imagined John Alderton as Squashy Hat and an equally craggy British character actor as Slater Bob…..

My question therefore is simply what book would the cast and audience like to have seen as a film and why.

        Kind regards,

        David

        1. I would like to see a film version of ‘We Didn’t Mean To Go To Sea’ because it is such a good story. The ‘Goblin’ is in fine form and it couldn’t be too difficult to make.

  3. Wow, Sophie, I particularly want to see and hear Kit Seymour, but no go because of train strike! Will the Q&As be recorded? x Jill

    1. I’m hoping the train will get me there! I can certainly ask if the Q&A could be recorded. Kit is coming to the 50th Anniversary celebrations at Windermere Jetty in June.

      1. I was at yesterday’s screening and it was wonderful to see you all together again! Unfortunately I had to leave before the end of the Q&A to get my coach so it would be wonderful to see a recording if it’s available. I have emailed the cinema museum to ask.
